Yosemite Winter Campout, Easy to Moderate Day Hikes
December 9 @ 12:00 pm - December 18 @ 12:00 pm UTC-8
Join us for group camping and hiking in wintry Yosemite while it’s quiet and solitary.
We will tent-camp in Upper Pines group campsite as usual, and our hiking activities will be combined from some of the following:
* Panorama Trail from Glacier Point to Happy Isles (13 miles),
* Pohono Trail from Glacier Point Road to Tunnel View (4 – 8 miles),
* also, Sentinel Dome, Taft Point, Dewey Point – we will make a more certain plan closer to the date.
(Everybody is free to join or skip a hike depending on their readiness/mood.)
However, our usual non-hiking activities are getting limited. No ice skating and no downhill skiing this year, for sure. These are the notes that the park has posted as of mid-October:
“Curry Village will close for the season on October 20, 2020 with a scheduled reopening date of April 1, 2021”. So, no skating..
“Yosemite Valley Shuttle -Closed for the season”.
“The Glacier Point Ski Hut will not open for the[masked] season due to lack of power.” No downhill skiing.
“Due to ongoing concerns related to COVID-19, Badger Pass Ski Area will not open for the[masked] season.”
But, “The Nordic Center at Badger Pass Ski Area is scheduled to operate as usual, including the Glacier Point Ski Trail, with cross-country ski rentals, lessons and snowshoeing opportunities.” Though other notes contradict to this – probably there is still a chance for at least cross-country skiing.. Will update as it’s clarified.
The Snow Creek cabin is also in our wintry Yosemite plan usually. But, “The cabin is generally open during the same time as the Yosemite Ski & Snowboard Area (formerly Badger Pass)”. This must mean that if Badger Pass is closed, the Snow Creek cabin will also be closed. Will update this info too.
Note, we limit invitations to 4 people, but we are likely to have more openings closer to the event’s date, so please do not hesitate to wait-list yourself. Also, though this is a 8-days event, participants can stay as long or as short as they want providing they inform the organizer which exact days they will be in. Then we will combine the dates making sure we squeeze as many participants as the campsite allows every day. Just put yourself in the waitlist and comment about you dates.
If you also attend our Thanksgiving’s Death Valley (https://www.meetup.com/HikeSF/events/274001515/) and Christmas Grand Canyon (https://www.meetup.com/HikeSF/events/273870277/) trips – thumbs up! You will be given a priority in the waitlist 😉
The shared cost will be $5 per night, per person, payable by cash to the host (my friend.)
Please, have your own camping equipment and food. (Suggested List will be attached here soon.)
If you want, bring some firewood in addition to what we are planning to have. Maybe heaters, if you wish.
My friend should get enough tarp to spread above the tents in a case of rain or heavy snow.
Parking will be outflow (after loading off at the campsite.)
P.S. This event is a subject of the Park’s decisions with regard of pandemic situation.
